I've always been a bit jealous of people who have faith in whatever system of belief they've chosen (Catholocism, Judaism, I-Ching, Buddhism... whatever). To be able to have something that they're always certain of in their life has to provide an imense comfort regardless of what crap may be happening in their lives outside of that.
I know that when things are bad I find myself wasting more time wondering "what's it all about" rather than turning my attentions back to working on making my life better. Even after years of studying various religions I still find myself unable to accept any of them as "the true path" but I do see parts in all of them that I strive to acheive.
Back to Pupper Master's comments on the show... I was only using DBZ as an example of having set expectations. Could you imagine if someone had only seen Ping Pong Club and had that as their expectation of what anime is then watched EVA? Or... how about Mouse? Expectations of a series can affect how you enjoy it. I look back at Independance Day and how much I hated that movie when I watched it because it was so very different from what I had expected.
I do agree that the whinyness of the characters did take away from the show for me a bit. Unfortunately, I know people like that in real life. I usually want to just shake them and tell them to get over it and get on with their lives. I guess that's one part of real life that I don't find entertaining. I still found enough going on in the rest of the series to keep my attention (and I also enjoyed Escaflowne more than EVA).
