Confused about EVA =(

To me if an anime lacks an interesting story or characters. I looked past various things including the fact that I personally am not really into mechas.

I can agree the characters are whiney (they are ment to be as they were Anno's way of dealing with personal demons) but the story is VERY interesting. It's complex and breathed life back into a played out genre by adding characters with depth and complex feelings. I hate mecha but gave this a chance as it was so different to the usual crap. The Japanese also felt it was so original that it got a lot of older fans back into anime they had grown bored of by the same old genres with the same old story lines...
