That's localisation. I'm not too fond of it myself, especially when it's 'surfer' talk or profanity (I'm not a prude, but sometimes the actual swear words seem a little strange). However, I can't complain because it's US companies acquiring the licenses for American audiences. If they didn't bother I wouldn't get to see much anime with decent subs at all.
Plus, unless it's dubtitles, localisation doesn't affect subtitles as much or at least isn't as extreme.
Anyway, it's not just US localisation. One the Takeshi Kitano movies I saw recently had subtitles localised for the UK. Watching Yakuza refer to "blokes" and "birds" was very strange.
