But like you said, you had a friend tell you about it. Most people don't have that, so first thing they usually do is go to Best Buy or something like that.
Although I'm sure there are people who go to videogame forums and stuff like that who found out about HK's. Or nowadays, you see alot of them on Ebay and can trace the sellers site back from there and find HK's that way as well.
That's how a found this site. I was buying R1's off of ebay and bought HK's by accident (those people are bastards) then I did about 15 minutes of searching and found this site. I don't mind HK sellers at all, but I can't stand those ebay jerks that list their HK's as R1 "Factory pressed" dvd's. One person that bought something from me recently even went as far as to post a picture of the dbgt individual dvd's and say that's what they are and then send them a 3 disc HK... Very wrong.

Also I want to have all the parts of a show before I start watching it, thus not collect it as and when it is released. I hate to get drawn into a story and then have to wait to see what happens.
That is the key reason why I purchase some HK DVD's. Right now I am collecting Demon King Dante on DVD, but it will be toward the end of the year before I can see the series all the way through, so I have been thinking about getting the HK's soon as well...yeah, I will still keep collecting the R1's too.
With a series that I can tell I'm going to like I buy the R1's. With a main hobby of video games, I usually have to go the cheaper route with others. Of course I could be considered a cheapass in both hobbies. :p
Congrats on the modship Vicious! Is that at Animeniacs? When I saw "AN" I thought ArcticNightfall, but then I started reading about discounts and them selling R1's...

If I had a penny for every time I seen this argument.... well you know the rest.
I'm with HK DVDs...
I paid $106 for.
Samurai Deeper Kyo Perfect Collection
Rune Soldier Perfect Collection
Zenki Saga Part 1-4..
For those of you who are thinking, that's stealing from the creator?s bla bla bla (pointing fingers at Vicious). Talk to me once you have grown up and acquired some financial responsibilities. You know things like Mortgage and all that staff.

i'm sick and tired of hk vs. region 1 threads, or threads turning into such. which i don't believe was what the creator intended. if i had a nickel for evertime......
i agree perfect collections are space savers, and i prefer them over having to carry around 7 cases i just have to carry 1. other than that it really doesn't matter.

amen to that. But, I would get HK's even if I didn't have a mortgage, kids, wifey, etc...

I am grown up and do have financial responsibilities. Not a mortgage yet, but I still have plenty of them.
Also, it is stealing. Are you saying it's not?
And, I've never cared what anyone buys. All I've ever gotten mad about is when people blame the R1 companies for shit or come up with other reasons for rationalizing their buying of HK's. If you're gonna buy HKs', say that you're a cheap bastard and that's why you buy them. That if you didn't have to worry about the money, that you would be more willing to buy the R1's. But don't give me some lame excuses, because in the end, it always comes down to the money.

Well well well... the great battle of the HK bootleg vs. legit R1's. I really can't afford anything else but , HK's. It sucks being poor with commie parents who hate everthing i do and/or eat. Not much cash in the "skip lunch so you can spend the cash on other stuff" industry I guess. so until i can legally job (damn child labor laws) I'm just gonna cheap bastard buy Hong Kong anime, watch free porn, and pack sme lunch

I'm not debating anything. I'm just saying, be honest about it. Like if I go to a strip club, I'm not gonna lie and say: 'I had to go in to use the bathroom' or 'I really enjoy the food and drinks there'. I'm gonna be like 'I wanted to see some hot girls naked.'

I prefer The Perfect collections myself. It is much easier to swollow taking a chance on a title you havent seen and spending less then 30 then spending over 100+ for a series you don't know for sure if you are going to like or not besides if I got everything in the singles or large box sets they come in, I would probably only have a very small # of series's

I?m new here, but I don?t think R1 DVD?s are marked up THAT bad? a few are of course, but in general, if you look around for good prices online (rightstuf.com deals, animeondvd.com ? forums, ect) you can get them fairly cheap. I personally have been collecting anime since 1994, and I have a legit collection of over 700 tapes and DVD. But now that I?m on my way to graduate school, I?m pretty damn broke. I still want to see a lot of series and for me HK DVD are generally a better option, since I don?t have to watch them on the computer, and I can more easily enjoy them with friends. I?ll still buy a R1 set/DVD if it?s a good deal, but it?s mostly not an option.

Dang! I am here thinking that the DVDs are taking up my shelf space, contemplating whether to change them all to thinpak packagings. I can imagine how much space the tapes are taking up.
