If you return the DVDs, he can send your defective/damaged DVDs back to his supplier for credit. His only costs are shipping, so that would be the only justification for supplying a receipt (if he doesn't want to waste money sending you/MAC the DVDs).

It depends on the dvd player..... some dvds will work properly in different players and not in others
