Yeah, besides cars and electronics, anime is a huge export for Japan right now and is a big help to their economy (I read this in the Wall Street Journal last year). Japan's economy let's just say is not as good as it was in the 1980s but still stabilized to say the least. Japan also has that one-sided trading policy of they export and don't import (though that isn't always necessarily true due to certain tariffs), and banning an impacting product like anime would do nothing more than hurt trade relations. On top of that, the banning of anime trades could result to Japan firing back by banning having Nintendo and other video game companies to limit video games to the U.S.
OK, I'm sounding a little paranoid, but this is a best scenario I can come up with of what could happen if anime were ceased to be imported to the U.S. Even if that did happen, we'd still get Hong Kong DVDs.
