For me it's a budget issue. Got ?500 for anime a year. I buy my HKs in bulk, so that makes 100 HKs (postage and tax already included), giving me around 700 episodes. So that's around 2 eps a day, which is close to what I actually watch.
R1s are expensive for me as I live in Europe and you have to add postage and tax. And European R2s are also still very expensive. Cheapest in Germany is 13 episodes for ?55. Normal is 26 episodes for ?200 (like Noir on 8 discs at ?25) or ?180 (like Slayers on 6 discs at ?30). That gives an average price per episode of around ?6. So with my ?500 budget I only get around 80 episodes, that's less than 2 eps a week, compared to the 2 eps a day I get with HKs.
So as long as the price per episode ratio still is nearly 10 times in the favor of HKs, I will continue buying them.
