Someone deleted my Initial D post here. It's being ruined.
Quote:TokyoPop feels it necessary to change the names of the characters in Initial D; the Anime AND Manga. As well as Quote:Responding to the Anime community's uneasiness regarding "editorial changes" being made to Initial D, Tokyopop has sent out a very lengthy letter explaining their choices. weatdrop: weatdrop: weatdrop: weatdrop: [ #Uke-Fansubs current projects: Gundam SEED Destiny ]

I hate it. That is plain out stupid. Though the DVDs will be retailing at $19.99.

Wait, let me get this straight. In the anime (not the manga) all they changed were the characters names?
Why does this matter? It doesn't interfere with the original creator's message at all, unless they had some deeper allegorical meaning like Dicken's often did, but this would be lost on a non-japanese speaking audience anyway. What am I missing? Censoring the manga sucks, and if they did the same to the anime, that is most definitely unacceptable, but just changing the names... I don't see that as ruining anything.

In the anime and the manga they changed the names. In the anime they were also talking about making MAJOR changes to the storyline, removing the symbols from the cars, completely removing the whole technical auto aspect from the storyline. Tokyopop is going to rape Initial D, that's all there is to it.

Oh, if they change anything other than the names that most definitely sucks. I got the impression from this that they decided to keep everything but the names though.
"Most of the time, amidst this onslaught, we stick to our guns. Tofu stays tofu - place names like Mount Akina, Myogi, Akagi, the names of the racing teams, the name of the very prefecture wherein the story unfolds, the Fujiwara Tofu Shop kanji on the side of the Eight-Six -- we keep them all. But, bless our pointy little heads, we decide to create nicknames for some of the character names in the books because we know that they will have to be changed when the show gets on television, anyway ? and at least we can keep the nicknames close. I hate name changes.. My poor CCS friends turned into Sah-koo-ra and Madison. Poor Sakura and Tomoyo-Chan! Not to mention the other name changes and the hacks to the series..I hate hate hate name changes. Would never think about spending a dime on the Ini D anime if they cut it up and/or change the names. Christ, the MAC version is great anyway. I'm on disc 2 as we speak..

weatdrop: Alright. This is what I want to know. I have looked for the answers since the early eighties, and still haven't found it. Here it is: Just why do they have to change names in anime in america? Dosen't that make kids ignorant of other countries? Damn you Tokyo pop for putting slang in my Lupin and destroying Initial D.

They figure americans are either too dumb or too lazy and can't handle the Japanese names and will get easily confused. Either that, or they are so arrogant that they feel everything should be 'americanized'. That's my take on it.

Lupin was amaricanized for a reason. Many of the jokes in Lupin were culture-based, and most American's wouldn't understand them. For this reason, it was americanized.

Yes, but you're one person out of 500,000. The numbers don't add up, man.
Also, on the Initial D topic, the R1s are actually getting little use of the Super Eurobeat Soundtrack. All I have to say is that they are going to be a total ripoff....just stick with the HKs. [ #Uke-Fansubs current projects: Gundam SEED Destiny ] |
