i'm saying, were tobacco to be banned, it would be really easy to grow and distro, since it's an easier crop to cultivate than marijuana is.

I have read up on alot of this stuff for a tobacco plant to have the yeild that famed ones do alot of care and fertilizer ect has to go into it, it needs the right conditions temp, sunlight. Marijuana on the other hand will grow like a weed given half the chance and it can grow in any climate from texas to WA state and everything in between without any special care

Zagatto Wrote:Here in Ontario they just made it illegal to smoke in any public building including bars and resteraunts and even smoke shops.
My neighbour owns a bar and his revenues are 75% below what they were this time last year. That's even with such factors as SARS and the power blackout we had here last year.
A very large percentage of bar patrons are also smokers.
If people don't want smoking in bars then they should look to finding ways to make an incentive for bar owners rather than just making it illegal.

I heard there was a loophole to the law, supposedly you can still smoke in members clubs so bars and clubs have people outside selling 1 year membership to their places for like one dollar and you can smoke in thoses places.

Yeah... they've started doing that. One of my friends had a big rant at some poor bar maid about the definition of "pub". For those who don't know, pub is short for "public house". This is because of the proliferation of private clubs in England once upon a time. Public houses were open to the common man and didn't have any sort of fee to get in while membership at private clubs required a membership fee and frequently some additional requirement be met (like a family name, a common job, or even a haircut... OK... I made that last one up... but it could have happened).
So now our "pubs" have started charging a $1 membership fee good for one night so they can qualify as a private club and are exempt from the new law.
My buddy says it's only a matter of time before the politicians work out some way to shut down that loophole.

Here's an interesting side note that most people aren't aware of. Nicotine is not natural in tobacco. The tobacco companies add it for "flavour". Never mind that it's one of the most addictive substances on the planet. I wonder why nobody has tried passing a law that outlaws the addition of nicotine to tobacco. How many people would stop smoking if they weren't addicted?

Then why is the name of the plant called 'Nicotiana tabacum'? The plant containes like 5% nicotine...

Pictures of ourselves - Mantis421 - 08-21-2004

You are right about the 5% thing, but tobacco companies add more nicotine artifically to make the product more addictive

Pictures of ourselves - Zagatto - 08-21-2004

I stand corrected. Nicotine is actually very common in tobacco.
I went and did my research and found lots of web pages out there that talk about additives being put into tobaco by the cigarette companies.
Check out http://www.ash.org.uk/html/regulation/html/additives.html which has an incredibly in depth article and lots of sources explaining what is added and what effect those additives have.

If I read that right, it's actually illegal to add nicotine to cigarettes.
It's not illegal to increase the pH of the tobacco which increases the "kick" and makes it more addictive. We can thank Marlboro for figuring this out first and the other companies noticed it after the big M went from 5th to 1st in sales in a very short period of time. Since then the big tobacco companies have devoted billions of dollars to researching how to make their product more addictive within the bounds of the existing laws.

Thanks for challenging me on this. I would have gone on thinking that nicotine was added to cigarettes if it weren't for this discussion.

Kristy,

You make me proud to be an old otaku. We have a good number of attractive women in our forum and I'm glad you've added yourself to our numbers.

I hope you don't mind but I corrected the colour of your pictures. I'm a graphics junkie... it's what I do. I tried sending to you directly but I can't do attachements to private messages here. I will take these down if you want.
