I have a hard time choosing one of these over but here are my top five:
Sanctuary - Ok... so this is my absolute favourite.
Lone Wolf and Cub - This is the one that got me hooked
Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind - Much more depth than the movie
Golgo 13 - the anime just doesn't capture how cool this guy is
Mai the Psychic Girl - Last I heard, Tim Burton had the movie rights to this
I miss having Pulp come out monthly. I've got the whole run and they tried some stories that I can't imagine in any other title.
A title that just doesn't make the top five but is still amazing is Pineapple Army.
Akira is an incredible comic as well... it just missed my top five list.
The Cowboy Bebop manga is respectable but not great.
blah blah blah... I could keep going but I'll stop here.
You've got my top five.

There is too much for me to have an accurate top 5. I left off so much great stuff like:
Berserk
Ranma
Inu Yasha
Mugen no Junen ( Blade of the Immortal)
Gunsmith cats
Shadow Lady
Naruto
Kinnikuman
Ah Megami Sama (oh my goddess)
Lum
Lone Wolf Cub(how the fuck did I leave this one off)
and those are just a fraction of what I can think of right now. 8O 8O

I think I may have more manga than anime in my collection.
Hard to tell because it's mixed in with the rest of my comic collection (I've had a $20/wk comic habit for almost 20 years).
There's a book written by Scott McCloud called Understanding Comics. It was originally conceived with comic books in mind but it covers cartoons as well and I highly recommend reading it. Most libraries keep it in stock now in the general collection.
You wouldn't think that reading a comic about reading comics would be entertaining but it is and it provokes a lot of insights into what you like about the titles you read.

I have a decent Anime collection, I've probably only put about $1200 towards it over the years. (I also Roleplay and those books aren't that cheap either!)
I'm trying to move more towards manga. I absolutely love the art and the presentation in alot of the books that I've looked through at B&N.
It's a matter of weening myself off one so I can balance the other in.
