Tech Help Needed: looking to buy some new hardware - Batz Kage - 08-21-2006

Alright guys, here's the skinny. Basicly, I'm gonig back to college and this means I need some new gear. The school has wireless access in the library, the lunchroom, & on the new patio they're building.

I need a laptop to take notes on & more importantly to play video games on while waiting for the 1 & 1/2 gap between two of my classes. I need some suggestions of good, but somewhat cheap laptops.
Normally my dad would look it up for me as Hardware isn't my expertise, but he has to many personal problems at the moment.

Also, I need a suggestion on a good mp3 player. They have one on Tiger-Direct that's 1 gig for about 40 bucks. It seems like a good deal in a way, till you add shipping & Fl tax, and then it's over 50 dollars. I know a few guys who have gotten better deals than that elsewhere, I jsut don't know where -_-

Anyways, any advice at all is welcome, & thanks.

You were kidding right?
BK: try dealnews.com - they usually list the lowest prices on stuff you're looking for.

Most of the time dell has some of the best deals.. but you gotta look around for coupons and such. But one thing.. cheap and gaming does not go together.. Generally cheap laptop have shitty ass graphics card that can barely play Solitare in windows. ;o)

Haven't their battery packs been exploding?

Thanks for the help guys, but as tragedy would have it, my laptop will have to wait another semester -_-, but I'm still trying to find a good mp3 player in the mean time.

I found one on-line; 1 gig of space for 40 bucks plus 10 shipping. I then found one at Wal-Mart for 40 bucks that only has 256 megs, why the big difference. I know the first one was on sell, but it seems like a whole lot bigger deal.

Later guys, & thanks again.

yes but what people fail to put into perspective is the percentage that have exploded to what hasn't..

Its the same as like the Firestone tires on FORDS a few years back or any of the recalls on vehicles. The percentage of it actually happening is very low.

Well, they're recalling 4.2 million batteries and apple is recalling like 2.5 million of the same brand (sony). I saw some pictures of one that exploded and you don't want that thing on your lap when it happens. The acid would make a pretty bad burn.

about waiting another semister...that just means prices will drop more, yay!...or most to all schools offer loans for computers, and since its a subsidesd student loan, it will have 0% apr untill you graduate...and even if you dont get it paid off before then, it will have about a 6% apr...so if your impationt like me, theres an option for you

a friend of mine picked up a newer gateway recently, it had a amd 64 3500+ cpu, 100 gig HD, x200 video with 128meg dedicated memory, 512 ram expandable to 1.5 gigs (i thinik) dvd burner internal wifi G/B...all the other goodies you would expect. he got it for 800 bucks new on ebay as far as gaming...it can run CS:S at the highest detail, and battlefeild 2 at the lowest detail, most other newer games it can handle fine at medium detail...and as far as best bang for your buck, i would think this would do it...ill talk to him a little later and find out exactly what model it is
