I thought it was pretty decent, but its not Kurasawa film of course. I have seen tons of movies like this. It was a great film don't get me wrong.

The Last Samurai - Atomic Orgasm - 12-07-2003

Yeah this movie was just excellence. Pure unadulterated excellence.

The Last Samurai - kodochafan - 12-08-2003

Saw this movie yesterday and thought it was great till the ending. Did they want to play to the audience or what?

However, the battle scenes were epic, Ken Watanabe was awesome and had a great presence on the film, and Tom Cruise's Japanese was actually passable! Unlike Uma Thurman's :p

Overall it was a great movie, but my fave for the year is still Kill Bill.

The Last Samurai - DARK OSAMU - 12-09-2003

Well Kill Bill was simply Brilliant! As was Samurai but in a different way!

Ken Watanabe completely stole every scene he was in. I will definitely own this on DVD when it comes out.

The Last Samurai - Lonely_monkey21 - 12-10-2003

I'm going to see it on Saturday, and from the majority of the posts I'd say it'll be good.

Wishful thinking here, but I hope Watanabe gets a nomination for Best Supporting Actor.

The Last Samurai - DARK OSAMU - 12-10-2003

I'm not trying to talk him up or anything but, Watanabe will probably get all kinds of International awards from the States. He was very good in that movie.

The Last Samurai - TheMarine - 12-15-2003

I went thinking it'd be ridiculous, so my friends and I were all ready to laugh and cause ruckus.

But then we were amazed at the quality, shut our traps, and went home after the movie thinking how great it was.

The end!

The Last Samurai - NYxCalm - 12-15-2003

Another Devil Dog From NEW YORK? Haha nice to meet ya motivator!

Wake NYxCalm! Shake the Samurai!

[my own personal .02 cents]

Hmm, just saw the movie : ?The Last Samurai? yesterday. It was a pretty good watch albeit the critical fanfare of naysayers.

There were some epic battle scenes ala ?Braveheart? that just stirred the primitive man?s warring heart! The story starts out in civil war era a new industrialized government where their emperor became a mere puppet. Capisce? America, with Captain Cruise as a alcoholic ex-officer of the Federal Union Army. In other words, a filthy drunk yankee drinking away the Indian Wars? atrocities that he was ordered to commit.

Maybe it was the way Capt. Cruise?s belligerent attitude toward his commanding officer that won me over, but the movie had just started to get interesting. After giving his boss the evil eye, some crazy Japanese imperialist diplomat offers Captain Cruise an offer. Lotsa yens, bucks and then some in exchange for Tom?s guidance and modernization of Japan?s Meiji army.

Just a brief nutshell historical lesson, The Meiji era was a time in Japan where the Samurai class were slowly wiped out by

So anyways, Captain Cruise is in Japan instilling western soldiering tactics to the wasabi clan when he?s abruptly ordered to send his newbie troops to battle. Against his wishes, Tommy boy marches his troops to a forest, only to be overrun by psycho samurai?s who slice and dice through poor Tom?s calvary? Talk about sashimi, the emperor?s ?modern? troops (armed with western guns) all got 0wn3d by the almighty samurai blades. Banzai!

Where was Captain Cruise? Well he uhh had those slo-mo fighting for dear life camshots, as he staved off would be killers. The enemy is impressed at Tom?s perseverance in fighting till the end, (which embodies the Bushido code) that their shogun boss orders his men to spare Tom. They bring Mr Cruise back to their village, and start nursing him back to health. Ironically, the widow who nurses Tom back up the hizzle is the wife of the samurai whom he killed? Forshizzle!

Hereon out, the plot gets thicker than aunt jemama, so I?ll just stop right here. Big Grin

The Last Samurai - Gireihei - 01-10-2004

The Last Samurai is awesome. I'm am honored to have seen this movie. I think at times there was some melodrama overload but for the most part I think it got the essence of why I am mesmerized by Samurai lifestyle and stories. As far a relating it to Kurosawa films, I don't think they are really comparable, it's just 2 different styles.
