You've said it man, they are just trying to cash in on the popularity of the oavs in Japan!!! I agree it looks like new Gainax, I don't think the same animation team is still together anymore anyway.

I think the only person involve with the first series and now with this series is Sadomoto the charater designer but I don't think he was the only character designer for the first series. Hideki Anno who directed the first series won't be directing the new series. Right now his doing the new OVA Cutey Honey - 3 episode series.
