Anandtech would disagree with you. In fact, go do a search for ANY athlon 64 article in anandtech and look at their benchmarks. The ONLY benchmark that the P4s have a consistent lead in is Video encoding. Not even Audio encoding! When it comes to business apps, they are hit and miss. When it comes to gaming, they are consistently behind. On top of that, these are the 3Ghz and above chips that are being tested. Many times, the 754 AND 939 3000+ chips are beating out 3 and 3.2 Ghz EE P4s. That's a $165 vs $800+ chip. The answer it VERY obvious in what he ought to get.

For the Hard Drive, get an SATA HD (as I stated already). I also reccomend Maxtor over Samsung. Here's the HD I reccomend:

If you want to cut back, get a slower processor (>$100 difference) and some different memory. Crucial is expensive and their XMS line is even more expensive than their regular brand. One would say you may want to scale back on HD space, however, that's nickles and dimes. Going down to 120 gigs would only produce a $10 savings. I think 40 gigs is worth $10 :p

And your 3000+ that you claim lacks severly. But again like i said its hit and miss..
But i do know this from alot of friends i talk to most have more problems with AMD chipset motherboards.. either the IDE controller going out.. Or video cards not working with the motherboard of the MS just going dead after a little while of use. And this isn't just a single friend. Its multiple and they all know what they are doing and have built many computers. Heck i still have an old Duel PIII 600 running and kicking now.. still haven't had a single problem with it.
This is more for performance but i would suggest this Harddrive.. ;o)

And with DVD Burners i would personally go with Pioneer, Plextor or Sony as my brands.. But we all have our opinions in that aspect.

Oh and what do you mean by next gen Disk tech? Do you mean a faster Disk burner? I think I can buy a 16X DVD burner-rom with a CD 52X32X52 combo burner.

it looks like the 3.46 and 3.4 EE are consistently being killed by the 3800+ and 4000+. Those are the only two that are standing a chance against the A64s, since the rest of them (even 3400+, for god's sake!) is killing any other semblance of a P4. Then, consider that the CHEAPEST Extreme Edition Processor is $912, and the MOST EXPENSIVE Athlon64 processor is $879. I think you see that the ONLY P4 chip worth mentioning is far beyond in price than ANY Athlon64 processor.
look at any other benchmark of this sort on the site. That and I've never liked Tomshardware either. It all says the same thing: P4 is not a consistent contender unless it's an EE chip, which is expensive.

Well gee, if that's the case, you'd be better off with an ATARI 7800... it plays all the 2600 carts plus the better 7800 ones.... laugh... Oh, anyone interested in the above, pm me, I have one with 80 games including some light gun games and a bunch of controllers...including the 4 person paddle ones...
Maybe we can find a good used Falcon for sell... yeah, that's the ticket... might have to go look for one after Christmas!

Personally i have all brands fail on me at one point in time. I generally look more for performance like with the Raptors.. or grabbing two SATA's and making a RAID0 of them etc.. Because no matter what harddrive you have unless they are recalled they might fail sometime in the future.
