I think the Kenshin first season opener is decent. I liked it more than the second season.

I just want my samurai action anime to have a kick ass samurai action song, not a song about freckles or whatever else they were singing about.

Ah, I don't really care what they are singing about, I just like the song. Never read what they were saying.

Maria - Full Metal Alchemist (first opening song)
The Light before we land - Gunslinger Girl
Stray - Wolf's Rain

The first opening song for Full Metal Alchemist is called 'Melissa' (by Porno Graffiti), not Maria.

Cowboy Bebop is easily number one in my book. Yokko Kanno with TANK! are the perfect combination for an explosive tune that sticks with you.

After that comes Lupin III... yeah... I'll agree that the second run of Lupin had the best soundtrack too... althought I really liked the closing music in the first run that Miyazaki directed.

Hellsing is another super catchy tune that I love watching every time the episode starts.

The funny thing about Berserk is that I HATED the opening and closing music the first 10 episodes or so that I watched it. Then... as time went on that song grew on me to the point where I actually started sitting through the whole thing.

I would like to point out that for incidental music within a series there isn't a single composer I can think of that can compete with Yokko Kanno. Listen to how dynamic the soundtracks to Macross Plus, Visions of Escaflowne, Record of Lodoss War, and Cowboy Bebop are. She gets right into the music and makes it her own without overpowering the show that it supports.

Zagatto, you have an excellent point with Yoko Kanno's contribution to anime, as many of my favorite series, such as Macross Plus and Escaflowne, have some of finest music I've ever laid ears upon.

It seems that Yuki Kajiura is now under the spotlight, with her fantastic work in series such as Noir, Hack Sign, Madlax, and Xenosaga II, amongst other series. Also, her band, See-saw, continues to pump out some fantastic singles.

Zankoku na Tenshi no TE-ZE - OP of NGE ^^ could listen to it every time
Kindan no Panseé - OP of Silent Möbius, like it as much as the OP of NGE, its even good in engl. (The Forbidden Pensee)
Kaze Wa Mirai Ni Fuku - ED of Trigun... *sigh* Trigun... watched it 5x and still love it...

Oh yeah, Chobits.. The opening theme song is pretty catchy - I like it a lot; The part where see says "Let me be with you" sounds so cute but also so illegal at the same time - She sounds like she's 6
