O.K.
I was inspired to write this because of the other asian films thread and one poster said something about a film called 'Infernal Affairs' being super cool and awesome.
Now, my deal is that a friend of mine had been getting free vcd's of Hong Kong and other various asian films from an internet friend. My friend had no use for them and he gave them to me. The films are either martial arts, Yakuza/Triad, or other action titles. I have no clue where to start and I would like to know which films I should definately start with. To get an idea of what I am up against, there are around 100 films in this box.
I have watched these so far and liked them:
Story of Ricky
Fist of Legend
The Blade

Also along with the comment about 'Infernal Affairs', are the sequels also good? I have II and III as well.

So, if you are savvy about the live action stuff and know some titles that you recommend then please list away.

I also know that it would help to hear what is in the box, and I am going to post the list as soon as I get it all typed up...Big Grin

o.k. here is the list.
Hopefully you will see that these are not titles that are well known in the mainstream US video stores. Yes there are lots and No I am not trying to sell or trade them. If you see any titles you recognize as ones that were cool let me know. If anything it would be helpful if someone could point me to a forum that might be more targeted at this sort of thing.

Thanks, and here is the list!!!

Running on Karma, didnt see it but my friend did, he said it sucked

Hero (jet li), high production values but I thought wasnt too great, a bit artsy in my taste, especially the fight scenes.

God of Gamblers, old Chow Yun Fat movie with a young Andy Law, good movie, mostly a drama but had some amusing scenes as well.

Prison on Fire, another old Chow Yun Fat movie. Don't remember much cause I saw it a long time ago, I think I liked it though

Infernal Affairs
Infernal Affairs II
Infernal Affairs III, already commented on theses movies

A Better Tomorrow, classic gangster movie, havent seen the other ones

A moment of Romance, I saw a bit of the 3rd movie, they seem to be very melodramatic romance movies

I probably saw a few others long time ago but dont remember the titles. I also have a few other ones on your list that I havent had a chance to watch yet, as soon as I do I'll post what I thought about them here
Hero would have been much better without all of the "flying" stuff. As it was Hero was worth watching.

I'm glad someone brought this movie up. I watched the film yesterday. I had downloaded it off the net. The Chinese script in the beginning wasn't subbed and neither was the Chinese at the end! Does the emperor go on to unify all under heaven?!
No He unifies them under ROBOT VALHALLA!!! Then when Galvatron resurrects Skeletor they rule the world and make everyone their slaves to pick flowers so they can saciate the thirst for girly things! YES it is our DESTINY!!

EDIT

Well maybe not.
This movie was made before the Robots formed Robot Valhalla.Wink
Can't forget
Versus
Battle Royal
Ringu
Dude if you love asian cinema then you gotta try Takashi Miike his movies burst with originality. Also Ryuhei kitamura got some good ones.
Hmmm, from that list, I'd add Ashes of Time and Hard Boiled as ones definitely worth watching.

Obviously this would contain spoilers

Beginning of the movie

Two thousand years ago...
during the Warring States period,
China was divided into seven Kingdoms.

For years they battled for
supremacy while the people suffered.

The King of Qin was the most
ruthless in his efforts to conquer
the land and unify all under heaven.

He was regarded as a common
threat by the other six Kingdoms.

The annals of Chinese
history are abound with tales of the
assassins sent to kill the great King.

This is one of the legends...

....

End of the movie

Nameless was executed an
assassin but buried a hero...

Sky gave up his sword in
honor of his fallen friends...

In 221 B.C., the King of Qin conquered
all six kingdoms and unified China.

He ceased all expeditions and
built the Great Wall to protect
his subjects from the Northern Tribes.

The Qin Empire became
the first dynasty of China...
Thanks matthew! That makes that movie alot better. Big Grin Big Grin

I just finished Ju-On: The Grude. It is well.... I really don't know what to say about it.Rolleyes
