Every time I flip a page of a anime/manga magazine it always seems that there is some story or picture of Rei Ayanami (Neon Genesis Evangelion). Why does everyone thing she is all that, all she did was speak like ten words in the story and then she died. Whats up with this character that makes her so cool.
Her Hair is blue.
Think about it. Anyone with blue hair is destined to be MEGA popular. Did you know that in Japan, Sailor Mercury is the most popular Sailor Scout? And guess what ...HER HAIR IS BLUE!!! You can also stress the color blue in general....Like why is Gohan the star of the second part of DBZ??? His outfit is covered in blue! Why was Vegeta the main villain during the Saiyajin stuff??? He wore blue! Luna is also the most popular cat in tv history cause her hair is DARK BLUE!!! So there you go.
I think people liked her so much because she was the only character in the show that didn't whine like a little bitch.
She is one of the most popular characters over in Japan. Not sure why though. Maybe they like the obedient silent type?

Uh, Wing is Shounen. Gundam in general is Shounen.

It's mecha for girls. All the guys are practically women. The way the talk and act. The whole show is preachy and even the main authorities are mostly women. And the main guy and girl are pretty much living in "Days of Our Lives" ... It's a long soap opera with robots....it's shojo.
It might not be labled on the box -Shojo- but it is.

The entire Gundam series itself is a Shounen anime series. It is aimed at boys. It always has been. Wing's drawing style was edited so that it would appeal to girls, to bring in a larger female audience, but it was still a Shounen series at heart.

G Gundam would technically be "Super Robot War" style anime, if you've ever played the games. It's not really based off the "true" Gundam series namesake, and it plays a lot more off the SRW universe.

How can bright colored hair make someone so popular though, various characters in other stories have even more eccentric colored hair than Rei. Kanami Chidori from Full Metal Panic! is another character with blue hair and heck you only see her because she's the main character of the story, other than that no one cares about her. Other characters from other animes even have wilder hair colors like bright pink, green, or some wild streaks in their hair and they're no where near as popular as Rei is. So whats up with this character that makes her have like 100+ wallscrolls of her and companies pumping statues out the wazzu of her.
